My favorite conversation from our orientation weekend was:
"Oh, bitte! Bitte, bitte, bitte! Bitte, kiwi..."'
...."He speaks 'Bitte'".
From what you've hopefully gathered, this 'Bitte-speaking' fellow student has some vocabulary expansion to look into.
But I do love the word, Bitte! In both its correct and incorrect usages. What does it mean, you ask? Well, it's direct translation is 'please'. But if you say "Danke schön" you'll hear a "Bitte schön"! So apparently...it also means...'you're welcome'. Actually just throw it into any question you ask, for good measure. Es ist sehr höflich.
Yeah..ok fine. Still working on the German. Cut me some slack, Bitte!
